Dell overtakes HP in US sales, HP plans elaborate retaliation

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Dell must be doing something right, because according to recent sales figures, the PC maker has topped HP as the number one computer supplier in the States. The Texas-based computer-maker saw sales hit 5.35-million units in the fourth quarter of 2007 (a jump of 15.2-percent over the previous year), while HP came in second with a paltry and embarrassing 4.5-million units shipped. The increase in numbers seems to stem from Dell's shift out of direct sales to the sale of systems at retailers like Best Buy and Wal-Mart, though internationally HP still rules the roost, garnering a 19-percent market share worldwide. Of course, if they can overtake in America, Dell can certainly turn it around elsewhere. Watch your back, HP.

iPhone putting on a Lotus Notes suit?

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

If you're looking to gain respect for your gear as a serious business-class tool, there's no better way than to infiltrate those Big Four accounting firms still using Lotus Notes. According to a piece carried by the Associated Press, Lotus Notes eMail is coming to Apple's iPhone and iPod touch. We kid you not. The announcement is expected as early as Sunday the 20th, the day IBM's annual Lotusphere conference kicks off in Orlando. The software is free for those with existing licenses which means IT is going to have a hell of a time keeping it out of users' hands. If true, the application would presumably be the first official, third-party app developed with Apple's new iPhone SDK. IBM is also expected to announce their free Lotus Symphony flavor of OpenOffice for the Mac at the same time. An IBM spokesman seemingly confirmed the announcements by saying that Apple and IBM have, "a lot in common. We're going to cross-pollinate." Let's just hope they manage to untangle that jumbled Notes UI for finger-friendly navigation during the mating ritual, eh?

Vuzix iWear AV920-C further isolates multi-player gamers

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Vuzix, once known as Icuiti, is back with a modified video eyewear design for gamers which they claim is a world's first. The AV902-C starts with their AV902 headset's twin 640 x 480 LCDs. They then add the ability to segment multi-player displays so that the person wearing the AV902-C only sees their half (2-player) or quadrant (in 4-player) of the screen presented as a 62-inch virtual display. Up to four of the AV902-C's can be daisy chained together for distraction-free (and cheat-free) gaming. Available February for an undisclosed price.

You wouldn't think it, but Yamaha's YSP-series of sound bars throw a decent faux surround sound in space-challenged apartments and flats. Now they've returned with a new YSP-3000 model featuring 2x HDMI inputs, optional iPod compatibility, XM Neural Surround, and 3rd Generation IntelliBeam with optimizer mic. Inside this 31.5 x 6 x 4.5-inch block you'll find a pair of 3 15/16-inch woofers and 21, 1 5/8-inch beam drivers pushing 82W of total power. Sure, it doesn't pack the 120W thump, HDMI upscaling and analog upconverting, or the component inputs of its bigger YSP-4000 bro. Then again, it doesn't cost $1,800 either. Available now for $1,200.
