How can I update my Joomla1.5 to the latest version?

Upgrading existing installations of Joomla 1.5

The authors of Joomla issue patches which will upgrade an existing version to the latest stable version. Below is given an example of how to apply such a patch. It is a simple example and does not involve any changes to the structure of database tables.

Logon to your Joomla application as admin and note the current version you are running (in the top right corner of the window).
Take your Joomla application offline - you do not want someone posting or commenting while you do the upgrade. To do this, click on Site->Global Configuration->Site Settings->Site Offline - click 'Yes'. Do not log out.
Using your web site control panel back up your site and your database. If you do not do this a failure (network, application, upgrade, browser crash or other) could result in you losing some or all of your existing data.

It is your responsibility to back up your data.
Download to your computer the patch you require from www.joomla.org, eg Joomla_1.5.12_to_1.5.14-Stable-Patch_Package.tar.bz2.

This can be difficult to find. Click on
DOWNLOAD JOOMLA
GET THE LATEST VERSION
then "Download other Joomla 1.5.x packages >>"
and select the appropriate package (it doesn't matter whether you choose the .zip, .tar.gz or the tar.bz2 version. The Unzip or Unpack option in step 11 will handle all types of packages).
Return to the control panel for your site.
Click on File Manager.
Select the folder that is the root of your Joomla installation.
Click on Upload files and browse to the patch you downloaded in step 4.
Upload the file and close the upload pop-up.
You should now see the patch listed in the folder.
Right click on the patch and choose Unpack. The patch will be installed.
Return to your website admin screen and refresh. The new version number should appear at the top right of the window.
Bring you site back online (see step 2)
